What Is a Parenting Plan and Why Do I Need One?

A parenting plan is a document detailing the rights and responsibilities of the post-divorce relationship between parents and their kids. A parenting plan should address issues such as the child’s education, health care, and physical, social, and emotional well-being, and must include a time-sharing schedule. Florida courts require a parenting plan for all divorcing parents of minor children.

Any parenting plan approved by a court must address the following issues:

• Details about how parents will share daily tasks associated with the upbringing of the child.
• Time-sharing schedule that will specify the time the child will spend with each parent. This should include holiday time sharing.
• Designation of who will be responsible for health care, school-related matters, and other activities. What school will the kids go to? Will they enjoy extra-curricular activities and who will pay for those?
• Methods and technologies parents will use to communicate with each other and with the child. Will there be limitations on parental communication?
